collage 2021 16”h, 20.5”w
The recent incitement to violence between Israel and Hamas and the resulting rocket attacks from Gaza are blamed on Tik Tok, the social media video-sharing platform. Using collage, I built the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood, representing a land dispute in the eye of the storm. I offer memes about compromise and rapprochement, which are needed now the violence is subdued. These icons, on cell phone screens, resemble the TikTok view, situated as if they fell from the rockets fired. While searching for the Palestinian Arabic word for co-existence; included here in Hebrew, I asked a Palestinian friend which word best represents the Palestinian desire for a better outcome and he said it is “musalaha” which means “reconciliation”. That word is affixed to the top of the collage. A map of the tunnels from Gaza into Israel flanks the lower part of the collage.
