gouache and collage 2024 20”h, 20.5”w This collage weaves together ancient texts with present-day sorrow, drawing from Jeremiah’s prophetic rebuke, Midrashic interpretation, and Tisha B’Av—a day marked by Jewish mourning for the destruction of the Temples. The imagery of a barren fig tree and Jerusalem reduced to rubble while jackals roam amidst the ruins evokes the devastation of exile and desolation. These elements are juxtaposed with the Midrashic scene of Mount Sinai, where HaShem holds the mountain over the Israelites, warning of chaos should they reject the Torah.
At its core, this piece expresses my deep anguish and frustration with the Israeli government’s actions, particularly Prime Minister Netanyahu’s response to the hostages and the ongoing suffering caused by war. The grief of the ancient Israelites witnessing their Temple in ruins parallels my feelings about the destruction and pain being wrought today. Through this collage, I convey my sorrow for all lives affected and my struggle with what is being done in the name of Israel.
