An elevator transports parts of the earth’s atmosphere up to the exosphere. Foer was sketching ideas for this collage at the same time as the massacre in Belgium took place (March 2016). She decided that if anyone needed to be beamed up and away from our planet, it should be Tintin, the hero of the popular twentieth-century comic series, The Adventures of Tintin, created by Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi, who wrote under the pen name Hergé.
